PBL (Problem-Based Learning) is student-centred pedagogy. With the help of PBL, some open-ended problems are found in the trigger and these problems are assigned to students for a solution. The most important aspect of PBL is that it allows the students to involve in the learning process through knowledge acquisition, collaborating with group members and communicating with group members. First of all, Problem-based learning was developed for medical students but now, almost all the educational departments are using this method. Here, we will discuss how problem-based learning is helpful for students to improve skills.
Learn to work in groups
We can’t deny the importance of collaboration for students. As a student, it is necessary for students to learn collaboration skills. With the help of collaboration skills, students will be learned how to work effectively by involving themselves with the team or group members. Project-based learning is helpful for us in this regard because it allows students to collaborate with each for the purpose of learning. Learning alone is also helpful for students but it can create lots of confusions for students. Therefore, when students collaborate with each other for the learning process, they can easily overcome these problems.
Students learn how to play different roles in a group
It is a fact that in project-based learning, we have to involve students in different projects. There are lots of sessions of the same project. By working in collaboration, students are asked to complete all the sessions individually. In other words, students are asked to work on all aspects of the problem. As a result, students will be able to learn how to solve all the problems that are arising at a time. It means that PBL is also helpful for students to instil problem-solving skills.
PBL allows students to become creative
Creativity is also an important aspect of PBL. Its reason is that after arising different problems, students are also allowed to find out solutions to these problems. In order to provide his/her point of view on a specific question, students should have creative skills. Therefore, we can also say that PBL is also helpful for students because it is instilling creative skills among the students. These creative skills will be helpful for students to solve different academic papers. These creative skills will also be helpful for students to inspire their teachers.
PBL also enhances the research skills of the students
It is a fact that if you want to find out a possible solution to a problem, you will have to find out the necessary information. Moreover, this information is also required to strengthen your point of view. While working in a group, you will have to provide arguments about any topic. After presenting these arguments, you will have to support these arguments with the help of suitable examples and evidence. By finding information from different resources, students will be able to enhance their research skills.
PBL improves the communication skills of the students
While working in a group, you will have to communicate with each other. If you don’t communicate with each other, you will not able to find out possible solutions to your problems. By communicating with each other, you will be able to discuss all the angles of your problem and you can also discuss resources that are helpful to find out the necessary information to solve these problems. As a result, the communication skills of the students will be enhanced. These communication skills are very helpful for them in their professional life.
Students will learn how to organize information
After finding enough information for the solution of the problems, the next step is to organize this information. PBL learning also teaches the students how they can organize their valuable information in different ways. First of all, students can organize the information in chronological order. It means students will learn how to organize all the facts in the way in which they happen. Secondly, students will also learn that they can also organize the information in an inverted pyramid. It means that students can organize the information in the newspaper style. Thirdly, students will also learn how to organize the information in deductive order. It means that students can learn how to organize the information from general to specific. Fourthly, students can also learn how to organize the information in inductive order i.e from specific to general. Therefore, we can also say that PBL also instils organizational skills among the students.
Along with these skills, PBL is also helpful for students to improve their reading and writing skills.
